The new iPhone 8 handsets have a fun little feature of being able to be charged without wires. Granted, you need a Qi-certified charger to do it, but the feature is there. And now several car manufacturers are loading their vehicles with chargers that meet that certification as well.
Apple has added a page to its support site detailing which manufacturers have chargers capable of wirelessly charging your iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in all of its vehicles. They are:
- Audi
- BMW
- Chrysler
- Ford
- Honda
- Mercedes-Benz
- PSA
- Toyota
- Volkswagen
- Volvo
While iPhone 8s aren't a problem, Apple issued a caveat saying that some models may not work with the iPhone 8 Plus:
Some automotive wireless chargers have physical size constraints and might not fit every phone. If you're planning on buying a car with a wireless charger, make sure that your iPhone will fit in the charger first.
Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC have only a few vehicles that meet the Qi certification as of 2018. Models from 2017 will not be compatible. Those models are:
- 2018 Buick Enclave
- 2018 Cadillac Escalade
- 2018 Chevrolet Bolt
- 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2018 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2018 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2018 GMC Terrain
- 2018 GMC Yukon
- 2018 GMC Sierra
The support page says nothing of the iPhone X, although given that the upcoming top-end model operates on the same Qi standards as the iPhone 8 handsets, this list should work for it as well. However, the size caveat would still apply.
