TiVo on Monday said it agreed to allow subscribers to America Online's Internet system to program their home TiVo television recording service remotely, via a Web site.
Users of America Online, a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc. AOL.N and the nation's largest Internet provider, and can go to a television guide section of the AOL system and click on a link that will instruct their TiVo machine to record a program at a certain date and time.
The feature is free for America Online subscribers but is available only to TiVo users with a Series 2 unit, the most recent version of its digital video recorder. The DVR must be connected to a high-speed Internet line.
A TiVo spokesman said he was unaware of how many America Online members were also TiVo subscribers. America Online has more than 30 million users worldwide, while TiVo has just over 700,000.
