While the world of the Internet can sometimes be a scary place, there is a day, in February, every year, that promotes a safer and altogether friendlier environment online.
That day is Safer Internet Day (SID).
Now in its fourteenth year, there are events planned around the globe that will celebrate what is great about the Internet and the online communities that exist. The theme for the day this year is "Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you" and is a "call to action for every stakeholder to play their part in creating a better internet for everyone, in particular the youngest users out there."
You can use the map on the site to locate a ‘SID near you’ and explore the news and feedback from many of the countries taking part. You can even submit your own ideas for activities or events throughout the day. Although the fact that everything kicks off today, it might be a bit late to plan a SID event, but you can still get involved by promoting the campaign.
We’ve all had bad days at the office and those off the cuff posts that used to be flippant comments to your wife or friends are now more public. And with more and more pressure on social networks like Twitter and Facebook to clamp down on impulsive user posts, campaigns like this can help those users who are angry, frustrated or miserable to detach themselves from a situation, even just for a moment, take a deep breath and think before they post.
In addition you can visit the Safer Internet Day website, Facebook or Twitter profiles for the latest news throughout the day, and follow the #SID2018 and #SaferInternetDay hashtags to find out more.
