Here's an updated look at the latest in the hardcore frag-fest series.
We have a new gameplay movie of Tribes: Vengeance, which combines the multiplay experience that the action-shooter series is known for with, for the first time, a single-player mode. Having played the latest build of the game, we were surprised at just how story-driven the single-player was but the FPS action remains as intense and full-on as ever. The story is a space opera that charts two generations of a dynasty at war. You take on the role of multiple characters during the futuristic tale that has a feel similar to that of the Dune novels.
Up to 32 gamers can join in the more familiar territory of the online multiplayer which takes place in vast arenas. Developers Irrational Games have made a conscience effort to make the arenas more immediate in Vengeance as players can at times feel quite lonely in predecessor Tribes 2, such is the size of its multiplay locations. Tribes' USP has been its use of the vertical axis. Kitted out in jet pack-propelled armoured suits, players can take to the air at will (for a limited time, at least), making the fight as much an airborne affair as a ground-based frag-fest.
