Microsoft made it clear that the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets would start being sold in retail stores worldwide on October 22nd. However, at least some stores from the UK retail chain Argos started selling the Surface 2 tablets a few days ahead of schedule.
The Verge reports that some people were able to purchase the Surface 2 online on the Argos retail website, and then they were able to pick their units up in a retail store location. This apparently applied just to the Surface 2 and not the Surface 2 Pro, nor did it apply to the new Touch Cover 2 or Type Cover 2 accessories.
In a statement, Argos stated, "We fully comply with embargoes issued by our suppliers and have withdrawn the Microsoft Surface 2 from sale with immediate effect. We are working with Microsoft to investigate this error as a matter of urgency."
The rest of the world will have to wait until Tuesday to get Microsoft's new tablets in stores. Microsoft has already announced plans to hold midnight launch events for the new Surface models on Monday evening in 10 of its U.S. Microsoft Store retail locations. Those events will feature contests and giveaways, including a fast trip for one person from each of those locations to the Tuesday opening of the new Orlando, Florida Microsoft Store.
