WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 — The Department of Justice said Thursday that it will not seek to break up Microsoft in the new phase of the landmark antitrust trial, and won't try to prove that it was illegal for Microsoft to make the Internet Explorer browser a non-removable part of the Windows operating system.
THE SURPRISE MOVE comes just a week after U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ordered both sides to file a status report by Sept. 14, detailing what processes they each are requesting for gathering new evidence and holding hearings, and offering proposed schedules for the new phase of the trial.
The government said that instead of seeking a breakup of the company, it would seek conduct remedies to change the way Microsoft does it's business.
