Valve will be releasing the first Half-Life game since 2007 soon with Half-Life: Alyx. To celebrate the event and let those in the dark catch up, the company announced today that games in the Half-Life franchise are going free-to-play for a couple of months.
The games participating in this promotion will be playable completely for free on Steam until Alyx's arrival in March. It's not just the mainline Gordon Freeman-led games either, as in addition to the original Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Episodes, add-ons like Blue Shift and Opposing Force are included too.
Here's the list of games and their store links to begin downloading:
- Half-Life
- Half-Life: Opposing Force
- Half-Life: Blue Shift
- Half-Life: Source
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Half-Life 2: Episode Two
"Half-Life: Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but the games share characters and story elements," Valve explained in the announcement. "The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible."
As mentioned before, Half-Life: Alyx will be landing sometime in March. The game is yet to receive a firm release date from Valve. The game will be a VR exclusive, and the developer is supporting every virtual reality headset and control scheme available right now.
