After four consecutive losing quarters, VIA Technologies rebounded to post pre-tax profits of NT$49 million in the first quarter of this year, according to sources at the chipset maker. VIA's gross profit margin also climbed to 32% in the first quarter, up from 22.5% a year earlier, due to a rise in the ASP (average selling price) of its Pentium 4 chipsets, said the sources.
Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), however, continued operating in the red for the eighth consecutive quarter, posting pre-tax losses of NT$693 million in the first quarter, company sources said. SiS's net sales of NT$2.62 billion in the first quarter fell 12.5% short of its target, and the company's gross profit margin of 21.9% was down from 28.4% a year earlier.
