Vivo is out with a new concept phone -- the Apex 2020 -- which is filled with technology that should become mainstream in the coming years. The device features a waterfall display, lacks any kind of buttons or ports, and comes with 60W wireless charging support.
The Apex 2020 features a 6.45-inch full view edgeless display with 120-degree curved edges. The display of the phone wraps around its edge just like it does on Huawei's Mate 30 Pro, but the degree of curvature is higher here which makes the whole thing more striking. The display lacks any kind of notch or cut-out as the Apex 2020 features a 16MP under-display camera.
We had previously seen Oppo debut a concept phone with an under-display camera. Vivo is owned by the same parent company so we are presumably looking at the same technology, just that it has now been further improved. Vivo says that the light transmittance to the under-screen camera has improved by six times and it also uses various algorithms to improve selfies taken from it.
Another highlight of the Apex 2020 is that it lacks any kind of physical buttons or ports. This is something we saw in the Apex 2019 concept last year as well. To make up for the lack of ports, the device comes with 60W wireless charging support. The company claims that its wireless charging solution can charge a 2,000mAh battery in just 20 minutes, though it did not provide any details about the battery capacity of the Apex 2020.
That's not all though. There's another interesting part about the Apex 2020: the rear 48MP camera has gimbal-like stabilization. This means that the entire camera module has been stabilized which Vivo claims is up to 200% more effective than the OIS implementation found on current smartphones. The secondary 16MP camera is also unique because it offers actual optical zoom from 5x to 7.5x. The periscope zoom module has moving lenses to achieve this.
Other specs of the Apex 2020 include a Snapdragon 865 chip, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, and 5G connectivity. None of this actually matters though since the Apex 2020 is a concept phone meaning it is never going to go on sale. Nonetheless, the phone does show what we can expect from future smartphones.
