Windows 10: New evidence in build 9901 shows new slow ring build is 9916 [UPDATE]

Microsoft has been hard at work in the last few months to make Windows 10 a great operating system. Rewind to September 2014, and you have Neowin exclusively uncovering details about a new, leaner browser that the Redmond giant has been cooking in their labs.

Recently, we've shown you mock-ups of that new browser, codenamed Spartan, to give you a glimpse of what's coming to Windows 10 in terms of UI design. We've also talked about Cortana taking center stage in the new OS, and how to enable the new Trident engine in Internet Explorer for preview builds, as well as a new Login screen (build 9901).

Microsoft is expected to release the new 'consumer build' of Windows 10 via Windows Update for Windows 7 and 8.x users, so get ready for it with this tool if you haven't already. We found evidence in build 9901 that a new release may be almost ready for rollup, since a new slow ring preview build shows up as available in the Settings app.

Unfortunately, if you want to try and install it, it most likely won't work due to a problem with Windows Update in build 9901 confirmed by Gabe Aul back in December 2014. Still, this happens at the same time build 9920 was compiled, begging the question whether or not this is the build that's coming soon to Windows insiders.

Judging from what we've seen in build 9901, the upcoming release should have a slew of improvements in both functionality and user interface. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.

UPDATE: It looks like the latest fast ring build is 9918, and the latest slow ring is 9916.
