The Photos app that comes with Windows 10 is arguably awful. It is barely updated or advertised by Microsoft, crashes are common (it actually crashed while I was taking the screenshot above for this article), and it doesn't exactly pack a massive feature-set, especially when it comes to editing capabilities. Perhaps this is why Microsoft doesn't promote it that much.
However, people who still use the Photos app in Windows will perhaps be pleased to know that Windows 11 will be getting a new Photos app soon. The change was teased by Windows executive Panos Panay on Twitter:
Pumped to share another #Windows11 first look with you - the beautifully redesigned #PhotosApp is coming soon to #WindowsInsiders pic.twitter.com/hraNJAo9iF
— Panos Panay (@panos_panay) September 7, 2021
While the short clip above or Panay didn't dive in too deep into the Photos app, one area of emphasis seemed to be "Relive your memories in a new way". A redesign of the UI is expected as well, complete with Windows 11's signature rounded corners.
It remains to be seen if Microsoft will also introduce new media editing features, but one can hope. While there doesn't seem to be a release date for the new Photos app on Windows 11 yet, Panay says that it's "coming soon" to Windows Insiders. Given that it's coming this close to the general rollout of Windows 11, it is also unclear if it will be a part of the October 5 release of the OS.
