As they have for over two years now, Microsoft was again on top of the game console sales charts in the US for the month of January 2013. The company announced today that, according to data from the NPD Group, 281,000 units of the Xbox 360 console were sold in the US last month.
Microsoft added that the total number of money spent on Xbox 360 related items (hardware, software and accessories) came in at $338 million for January 2013. This compares to 270,000 consoles sold in January 2012, and revenues of $301 million for the same period a year ago.
GamesIndustry International reports that overall, US video game sales came in at $834.7 million for January 2013, up nine percent from January 2012. This sounds like good news. In fact, it's the first time in over a year that video games sales have not gone down from year-to-year. However, NPD also recorded January 2013 as a "leap month" of five weeks compared to its normal four weeks, which means that the industry got one extra week they would not normally have.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the number one best selling game for January 2013, followed by Far Cry 3, Just Dance 4, NBA 2K13 and Madden NFL 13.
