Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand has confirmed that it is jumping on the pop-up selfie camera bandwagon, a trend spearheaded by Vivo when it unveiled the APEX concept device at last year's Mobile World Congress. The new Redmi device with an elevating front camera was teased in an Avengers: Endgame-themed video as part of Xiaomi's recent partnership with Marvel.
There's no official name for the upcoming smartphone yet, but Redmi says it will be a flagship device which will likely be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi, floated the idea of a Snapdragon 855-powered Redmi handset in February during a team discussion about the brand's future held at Xiaomi's Shenzhen research and development facility.
Other key specs of the new Redmi flagship phone are still kept under wraps, but it represents a major leap for a brand that was once only an entry-level device from the Chinese electronics giant before its spinoff earlier this year. It will also mark Redmi's foray into a relatively new form factor that's currently limited to a few Chinese brands like OPPO with its Reno smartphone and Vivo, which already produced plenty of smartphones with pop-up front cameras including the Vivo S1, NEX, V15, V15 Pro, and Vivo X27. Whether Xiaomi will knock it out of the park just as it arguably did in the budget smartphone race remains to be seen.
