Instagram has announced that it is expanding its product tagging capabilities in the Feed to all public accounts in the U.S. Although it is primarily intended for brands, creators, and influencers, the feature can now be used by anyone to add product tags to their posts. The idea behind this is that this will improve discoverability of new items and support brands as well.
That said, it is important to note that you won't get any sales commission for products being purchased through your tags. Simply stated, Instagram may receive a cut from eligible purchases, brands will get sales revenue and exposure, buyers will purchase the item, but your effort will be pro bono, unless you manage to make an affiliate marketing deal with a brand.
The process to add product tags to your post is as follows:
Start to create a post on Feed.
Tap "Tag people".
Search and tag the brand first. Two options should show up at the bottom labeled "People" and "Products".
Tap "Products".
Tap photo to start tagging products. Use descriptors to find the product. Once you find the product, specify any styles and/or colors, then tap to add tag.
Hit "share" to publish the post.
People who tap on the product tag will get detailed information about it and will be able to purchase it directly inside the app or through the dedicated product page.
Product tagging is currently available to public accounts in the U.S. only, there's no word yet on global availability.
