Signal is a messaging app that is known for its security and privacy features. But, of course, apart from these critical areas, users are also looking for features which add new functionalities and improve usability. On that front, Signal customers will be pleased to know that the company now allows you to change your phone number on the platform without losing your data.
Signal has rolled out a new feature that allows users to change their numbers while still being able to access all of their chats, profile information, and groups. Given the fact that the app is used by millions of people around the globe, the ability to switch phone numbers without creating a new account will definitely facilitate a significant number of people.
People who switch devices but want to keep their existing phone numbers can use Signal's end-to-end encrypted device-to-device transfer on Android or iOS to migrate content. That said, one thing to keep in mind is that you need to do this before resetting your previous device or else the messages will be lost. This is because Signal data is not backed up to built-in mechanisms in the OS or the cloud.
However, if you are keeping your phone and just changing your number, the Change Number capability retains your existing content including profiles, messages, and groups on your device while ensuring that people can reach you on your new contact number. If a person changes their phone number on Signal, you will also see a notification in the chat informing you of their updated number.
The option to change or update your phone number is located under account settings if you are rocking the latest version of Signal for iOS or Android. Any change is propagated automatically to linked devices.
