Earlier this year, security firm Zerodium announced a prize pool of three million dollars for those who could develop a jailbreak exploit for iOS 9. To be eligible for the bounty the exploit must “lead to and allow a remote, privileged, and persistent installation of an arbitrary app (e.g. Cydia) on a fully updated iOS 9 device.”
As announced at the time, the bounty program was to expire at the end of October, and now that the date has passed, the firm has announced that there was one winner who will receive a million-dollar prize, while a second is eligible for a partial payout.
The firm plans to reveal the technical details of the exploit to their clients, who are described as “major corporations in defense, technology, and finance” as well as “government organizations in need of specific and tailored cybersecurity capabilities.” While paying clients will have full details of the exploit, the company won’t be immediately releasing the details to Apple, although it may consider it at a future date, and it has no plans to announce details to the general public.
