DivX Player Showdown - A review

Cheers Harry Lam for the heads up on this well written NINE page review of DivX players, below a blurb from the first page of the review:

Upon upgrading to WinXP, I discovered that my beloved Windows Media Player 6.4 had been replaced by a bloatware version of Windows Media Player 8.0.

Horrified, I started scouring the net for a replacement movie player (specifically DivX players). However, after installing a wide variety of media players on my system, I discovered that Windows Media Player 6.4 had just been hiding on my system (more on this later).

My Ideals of a Perfect Player:

  • Easy to use, visually appealing interface (skinable players allow for a variety of looks and interfaces)

  • Subtitle support

  • Configuration of DirectShow Filters

  • Dolby Digital AC3 Decoding with S/PDIF output capabilities

  • DivX menu support (DiviDivX)

  • Support for multiple audio streams

  • Regional Zoom capabilities (zoom up on a certain segment of the screen)

  • Rate Control (2x speed, 1/2 speed, etc)

  • DeDynamic functionality (pre-amp of files)

  • Keeps audio and video in sync
