Protect your privacy. Defend yourself against network surveillance and traffic analysis.
Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody from watching your Internet connection and learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.
The Tor Browser Bundle lets you use Tor on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser to protect your anonymity, and is self-contained.
Tor Browser 13.0 changelog highlights:
- New Stable Release: This is the first stable release based on Firefox ESR 115, incorporating a year's worth of changes shipped upstream.
- Accessibility Engine Upgrade: Tor Browser 13.0 inherits the redesigned accessibility engine introduced by Mozilla in Firefox 113, promising significant performance improvements for users who rely on screen readers and assistive technology.
- Refreshed Application Icons: The release includes refreshed application icons that adhere to each platform's conventions, improving consistency and user experience.
- New Homepage: A significant rewrite of the Tor Browser's back-end allowed for a redesigned homepage (about:tor), featuring the new application icons, a simplified design, and the ability to switch to the DuckDuckGo onion site for searches. This redesign also enhances support for users of screen readers and assistive technology.
- Red Screen of Death Eliminated: The infamous "red screen of death," which was an error state on the previous homepage, is no longer present. The automatic Tor network connectivity check has been removed, as it often produced false positives, causing undue alarm. A new banner on the redesigned homepage now checks Tor network connectivity.
- Bigger New Windows: New windows in Tor Browser 13.0 are now larger by default, presenting a more useful landscape aspect-ratio for desktop users.
- Letterboxing Update: Tor Browser's letterboxing technique, introduced in version 9.0 to protect users from being fingerprinted by their window size, has been updated. The maximum size of new windows has been increased to 1400 x 900 pixels to better accommodate modern websites, preventing responsive break points and horizontal scroll bars. This change aims to provide a more seamless browsing experience. [full release notes]
