Last year, Lenovo introduced the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, its first entry into the premium X1 lineup with 45W H-series processors, dedicated graphics, and a 15.6-inch display. Announced in May, this year's Gen 2 model takes things a step further.
The main change is the spec bump, as it comes with Intel's ninth-generation CPUs and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, replacing the eighth-gen chips and the GTX 1050 Ti. It also goes up to the octa-core Core i9 now, where previously it maxed out at a Core i7.
I also want to note that this machine uses ninth-generation processors because there are no 10th-generation H-series chips just yet. The only ones announced are U-series and Y-series, which are for ultrabooks and fanless laptops, not powerful machines like this. The other thing I want to address is that it does not come with a USB Type-C charger, since this has a 135W charger and that's too much for USB Type-C. You can use a Type-C charger though, although it will charge slowly. I'm trying to address what I anticipate being two of the most-asked questions here.
One other key feature of the new X1 Extreme is that it's offered with a 4K OLED display. That's not included on the model that Lenovo sent me, but I've been assured that it's on the way. OLED is always the way to go, but it's only offered with the Core i9 variant. I'm pretty excited about that one as well.
