Unboxing and first impressions of Lenovo's thin and light workstation, the ThinkPad P1

Announced in mid-August, Lenovo's ThinkPad P1 is the first of its kind. It's like a ThinkPad X1, but it's from the P-series, which is the firm's mobile workstation lineup. In fact, Lenovo later introduced the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, a device that has a nearly identical chassis to the P1. The difference between the two is that while the X1 Extreme has Core processors and Nvidia GeForce graphics, the P1 is a workstation with Xeon processors and Nvidia Quadro graphics.

You can absolutely consider the ThinkPad P1 to be an X1, even though it doesn't have the X1 logo on it. And it has a lot of firsts for the X1 lineup. Typically, ThinkPad X1 devices use 15W Intel U-series processors; all of the existing ones use eighth-gen U-series chips. So the P1 and X1 Extreme are the first to have 45W hexa-core processors, and the first to have dedicated graphics.

They're also the first to include a 15.6-inch screen, and they offer a 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR. Indeed, these machines are quite impressive.

The ThinkPad P1 has an Intel Xeon E-2176M processor, and Quadro P2000 with Max-Q graphics with 4GB GDDR5. It includes a 135W power adapter that uses Lenovo's proprietary charging port, as USB Type-C wouldn't quite be able to deliver that much power.
