Most of our readers won't be particularly familiar with 'Notes', Facebook's prior attempt at letting users write at-length pieces. The company has gradually withdrawn the feature to the backstage over the past few years but is looking to change that in the near future.
'Notes' allowed you to write at length and express yourself when the usual Facebook update just wouldn't suffice. From academic prose to tales of foreign travels, Notes was the place to share all the stories that Twitter - and it's 140 characters - would be revolted by. While the feature has been pulled into obscurity for the past few years, Facebook is now making a spirited attempt at rejuvenating the medium as an alternative to, well, Medium (a publishing platform that concentrates on longer, blog-like content).
The refurbished 'Notes' features a more friendly design, large cover images and better, clearer fonts. This makes the platform much more suitable for lengthy discourses and is particularly suited to blogs. While it may be aimed as a jab at Medium, due to the personal nature of Facebook, it seems unlikely, at least at the moment, that the professionals and journalists that have made the publishing platform such a success will be moving to Facebook's refreshed vision of 'Notes' anytime soon. For personal posts and random musings, however, Facebook might find a large and willing audience, indeed - especially since the feature might prove more accessible than setting up a separate WordPress or Blogger site.
The updated format is still not available to most users, however, but at least one user was able to share the new looks and features with the public.
