IO Interactive offers free upgrades for Hitman 3 Steam owners following rough launch

Hitman pouring wine

Hitman 3 originally launched a year ago, but just last week, the game finally shed its Epic Games Store exclusivity and arrived at the Steam store (among other places). However, the launch wasn't a smooth one for IO Interactive, with users complaining of server queues, the high price tag of the game and additional content, as well as VR bugs, among other problems.

Now, the studio is now offering an olive branch to Steam players in the form of free upgrades, giving owners the Deluxe Edition or Seven Deadly Sins Collection content depending on what they have.

"We were excited to bring HITMAN 3 to Steam with new content and we knew that anticipation and excitement levels amongst our Steam players was high, especially as the game had been an Epic exclusive for a year," says IO Interactive today in an update. "Ultimately, we didn’t meet our own expectations of a launch experience and we don’t like that our Steam community is beginning their HITMAN 3 journey in this way."

Hitman 3 Standard Edition owners are being bumped up to the Deluxe Edition, while those who already own Hitman 3 Deluxe or Hitman Trilogy are gaining the Seven Deadly Sins Collection expansion pass for no extra cost. This offer will be available through February 19, 2022, meaning anyone who purchases the game before the deadline will also get the extra content for free.

Hitman 3 Seven Deadly Sins expansion

At the time of writing, Hitman 3's Steam user reviews are sitting at a Mixed rating with a 55% positive score. This is with less than 1000 reviews. Compared to previous games in the trilogy, which still tout Very Positive user scores across both games, this is a massive drop. We will have to wait and see if IO Interactive's new offer will change the reception going forward.
