Microsoft announces IoT Plug and Play as part of its new intelligent edge offerings

Ahead of its Build 2019 developer conference today, Microsoft announced a few new solutions for the Intelligent Edge. These include the HoloLens 2 Development Edition, IoT Plug and Play, and Azure SQL Database Edge.

IoT Plug and Play is meant to make the complicated world of IoT simpler. It's an open modeling language that's designed to allow devices to seamlessly connect to the cloud. Microsoft compared it to years ago when it introduced Plug and Play, allowing users to easily connect peripherals to their PC without any complicated configuration.

“IoT Plug and Play underlines our commitment to providing a streamlined and optimized deployment path for customers using the Microsoft Azure platform, a major advantage in today’s competitive and quickly evolving market.” Richard Brown, VP of International Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc.

And then there's Azure SQL Database Edge, which is meant to bring the experiences of Azure SQL Database and SQL Server to the edge. Developers will be able to create their apps once and deploy them anywhere, as it allows for a common programming surface area across all three services.

It will support both ARM and AMD64 devices, and will offer analytics on the edge with support for graph data, Power BI, and in-database machine learning. The Azure SQL Database Edge preview is available now. You can join the Early Adopter Program here.
