Help me pick a lens!

Recommended Posts

Just bought the wife a Canon 1100D, only came with the 18-55mm lens. Looking at getting a zoom lens up to 300mm and later on a macro.

Would prefer to buy from this shop as its close to me and the prices seem quite good.

Canon 75-300mm EF f/4-5.6

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6

Tamron AF 70-300 f/4-5/6 Di LD

Looking at the specs side to side I think the Sigma is better.

My wife will want to be taking photos of things like ducks down at the lakes and I will be doing things like motorsport! Is an image stabliser lens worth the extra money? has anyone here really regretted bying a non IS lens?

When shooting fast moving objects from a stationary place (i.e. motor sport) then you don't really need IS because you would want to shoot at fast shutter speed to freeze the motion. And at fast shutter speeds IS isn't very affective and is totally unnecessary.

Don't get me wrong though. Overall having IS is good. So go with that.

In that segment, Sigma is quite al right. Just get a newer version with OS (OS is equivalent of Canon IS).
