firedaemon - firedaemon.exe

Application that works in the background and allows a user to install and run any other suitable application as a Windows NT or 2000 service.

seems harmless probibly something installed with a program that starts as a service on windows

side note: where did you get that theme and icons?

ah, solved the dilemma myself - simply deleted firedaemon.exe from the system32 dir and that dreaded error' doesn't pop anymore!

oh, the theme + icons can be found at:

firedeamon is most commonly associated with trojans do a virus scan ;) and check services.msc and uninstall any services that don't look right. IE iroffer, or servu

damn

I've disabled all services associated with firedaemon still though no avail! :(

That's kind of like saying "Is there any way to turn of the check engine light on my car's dashboard? It's really annoying - and while it may indicate a problem I don't really care." Which is really up to you but I'd investigate further and determine what is actually happening in the background. With firedaemon if you stop the service (set it to disabled) it shouldn't continue to start - or try to start. If it is starting anyway then something is starting it in the background. In all likelyhood this is some sort of malware - and firedaemon definitely doesn't come with SP2.

SureGuy

this is getting too annoying

I've about tried everything to destory that damn errror, including

  • Edited registry
  • Virus-scanned
  • Disabled any services associated with FireDaemon
  • Deleted dllcache directory in windows

yes it does matter. if you installed it, thats one thing. if you didn't, it DOESN'T come with windows, and you have some sort of virus/trojan/etc.

those are pretty much the only 2 ways that this program can get on your computer.

Well, without knowing how or why it came to be on your computer it is hard to say and a solution is one that involves much more than making that annoying error go away. Hell, if you are that worried about it just disable windows error reporting...issue solved.

The problem is that Firedaemon 1) has an uninstaller 2) Is not used by any malware I am familiar with 3) you have obviously 'tweaked' the system itself that you are not dealing with a 'I just installed WinXP w/SP2 clean and it just happened' scenario.

Wipe your drive and start over.

ah, finally some good news

I logged onto the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Chat and asked the Microsoft Experts about my particular problem.

Heres what they said:

Firedaemon is a well-known virus that hijacks a local computer and transmits information via the Internet.  You are receiving warnings about it because the new Windows Firewall does not allow FireDaemon traffic by default.

I've had a machine infested with this myself, and was only able to remove it by re-installing the OS.  As uxtheme_vortex mentions, FireDaemon is not -only- virus/worm software, but it is commonly used in that context.

See http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100274.htm

well the link might have solved the problem as I installed McAfee and ran a virus scan and here is what I came up with (see screenshot)

oh i know! mcafee is by far my favorite AV software now

I was using Norton Antivirus from Systemworks 2004 and it did not find any infected files and this was after latest definitions update

system seems to be running smoothly now!!!
