corrupted desktop icons

Recommended Posts

Last night for some reason i got a bsod when trying to open a file with divx player. The computer reset and everything was fine. Now this morning when I turned on the computer, there were corrupted lines up and down the screen, about ten of them in all. I reset the computer and the problem has now confined itself to two desktop icons. After several more resets, the problem is still only on those two icons, the larger problem has not reappeared. I have run adaware, spybot and norton's, and have detected no viruses or adware/spyware. What could the cause of the graphical corruption be? Is there any way to fix it? Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Sorry, i should have said. The icons are asushotkey (a program for some of the special keys on the asus notebook) and bmonitorpro (a bandwidth monitor). No, I haven't tried changing them and changing them back. My windows knowledge is not great, how would i do this?

  • Right-click the icon
  • Properties
  • Shortcut Tab
  • Change Icon
  • Note where the original icon is located.
  • Choose a new icon
  • Ok out of it all.
  • Then go change the icon back to the default one with the location that you noted.

Here is an icon to use if you dont know where you have any others:

12Powerbook.icoFetching info...

Save it to your Desktop then you can link to it from the shortcut.

sorry about the time I have taken to reply, I had to go to the doctor :( Anyway, i tried changing the icons and when I assign the new icon to them it appears alright, but when I change back to the old icon it appears corrupted again. What does this indicate? My big fear is that there was some sort of hardware problem when I got the bsod, could this be the case?

I dont think it is a hardware problem if the icons appeared ok looking when you changed them. It is more likely that the ico files are corrupt for those programs.

That is the only problem that you have had since the bsod correct?

Are the icons for those programs bad wherever that programs icon is? or is it just on the desktop.

BTW if you could a screenshot would help.

Above the delete and Insert btns is a PrintScreen/SysRq Press it open paint > paste > save as .jpg and post it here so I might see the actual problem.

For the meantime:

Here is the Hmonitor program icon that you can use to replace the bad one:

hmonitor.icoFetching info...

I am unable to provide the other icon for i do not have that brand of computer.

You might want to try and reinstall the programs and see if that fixes the problem.

It is now 11pm here and I am going to bed. Ill check this topic back in the morning.

Sorry about the quality of the image but when i tried to zoom paint didn't seem to like it and has messed with some of the colours, it gives you an idea of what the problem looks like though. The other icon for some reason now looks alright, and so i won't include a picture of it. Any idea why it might spontaneously fix itself?

The only reason that i can think of that it fixed the other one was that the bad ico file that was in the system memory was updated and replaced with a good one.

I would try and make a new shortcut to that program. If you know where the program is located go there and rightclick the exe and say send to > desktop(shortcut). If you don't know where it is located right click the current shortcut go to properties as if you are changing the icon, click the change icon btn and copy the path that is in the icon address bar. Open up explorer paste the path into the address bar remove the "file.exe" or "file.ico" from the end of the address and click "go". It will take you to the folder where the program is located. Now just right click the file that the shortcut was linked to, the "file.ext" that you removed from the address, and send it to the desktop. It will make a new shortcut for that program on your desktop. Check if the new shortcut works if so, delete the bad one.

Another way you might be able to fix the problem is by dumping all the temp files, cache, and memory. (not recommended if you dont know much about this.)
