The Pirate Bay Gets Musical

The Pirate Bay, one of the most controversial p2p torrent trackers, has launched a music site in collaboration with Lamont, a Swedish rock band, and their manager Kristopher S. Wilbur. According to the team, the birth of Playble.com was due to their agreement that "the record industry – with its current business model – is outdated." Currently the site only allows users to sign up for the Playble.com newsletter to be informed the minute that the service goes live worldwide.

Users will support artists financially by paying a monthly fee, but it is up to the user to determine how much they want to spend. Unlike popular online music stores, artists will receive portions of the money every time one of their songs is downloaded as opposed to receiving their payment from record labels. Record companies, as the middle man, are therefore essentially eliminated, along with the majority of artists, except for independent ones. The Pirate Bay intends on making it's transactions via torrents, meaning possible illegal downloads will be almost "completely untraceable" but also likely to face lawsuits for copyright infringement. The Pirate Bay isn't worried though, as they have previously often evaded law enforcement, usually by changing the location of their servers.
