Amazon has published a note for its customers to notify them of EC2's (Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud) new Windows Server offerings.
Amazon plan to offer customers the ability to run Microsoft Windows Server or Microsoft SQL Server in the cloud. In the note the company says "Our goal is to support any and all of the programming models, operating systems and database servers that you need for building applications on our cloud computing platform. The ability to run a Windows environment within Amazon EC2 has been one of our most requested features, and we are excited to be able to provide this capability. We are currently operating a private beta of Amazon EC2 running Windows Server and SQL Server."
At a partner technology event in London yesterday, Steve Ballmer hinted at the "Windows Cloud" service that Microsoft is widely expected to announce at their Microsoft professional developers conference next month. According to the register ballmer stated "We need a new operating system designed for the cloud and we will introduce one in about four weeks, we'll even have a name to give you by then. But let's just call it for the purposes of today 'Windows Cloud'."
