EA didn't wait until E3 week to begin its unveilings. The next entry in its Battlefield franchise was announced today and it comes with the title Battlefield 2042, a name that connects with the classic Battlefield 1942 and 2142 releases. Once again, a high-impact in-engine trailer accompanied the announcement, catch it above.
After two games set during the World Wars, the latest DICE-developed game brings the series forward to a near future world "transformed by disorder", introducing map-altering events like tornadoes, sandstorms, and a rocket launch, as well as wing suits, grappling hooks, and even robotic dogs into the mix. Unfortunately, there will not be a single-player campaign this time.
At launch, seven massive maps will be present that will throw together a whopping 128 players. However, note that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems will only support 64 players. Alongside returning modes like Conquest and Breakthrough, the studio also teased a new mode called Hazard Zone, but no details were shared today.

In 2042, extreme weather events and resource conflicts have shifted the balance of global power. The United States and Russia stand at the brink of war, while a mix of non-patriated combat veterans form independent groups known as Task Forces. Fight to define the future in this never-before-seen theatre of war.
DICE is also introducing a new Specialist system to the four classes that will be present in 2042, granting players special powers. Find more details about Specialists here. Live service elements are already confirmed for the game, with three-month long seasons and battle passes coming in to bolster the game's content after launch.
Battlefield 2042 is launching on October 22 across PC (Origin, Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are already up. EA Play Pro members are gaining access to the Ultimate Edition of the title on day one as well.
A gameplay reveal will happen on June 13, the same day the Xbox and Bethesda presentation is supposed to take place. It's likely that the next trailer will drop during that event. DICE will also be holding beta events leading up to the launch, though exact dates were not announced today.
