Facebook has added a few fresh capabilities to Messenger Rooms today. The new Messenger feature was announced last April, allowing users to start a video call from within Messenger or Facebook and invite friends to join even if they don’t have a Facebook account.
Messenger Rooms is now starting to roll out a new capability that will allow users to customize their background, just like Microsoft Teams' custom background feature. The new feature is available only on mobile devices and users can set their background to any photo they want to use. This is on top of existing features including the ability to use AR effects and immersive 360 backgrounds. Last month, Facebook also began allowing live streams from within Messenger Rooms.
In addition to custom background, Messenger Rooms now lets users create, share, manage, and join a room within the Messenger app more easily. The button for creating a room has been made more visible in the Chats tab. Users can also easily find rooms that they've been invited to at the top of their Chats tab. There is also an option to "create a room with a default, suggested or custom activity, set a future start date, and customize your audience selection."
