Microsoft's Xbox division has had an incredible year so far. It may have started off a bit rough but, the platform has managed to salvage the situation to a great extent. A big reason for its success has been the confidence it has reposed in indie developers.
While it may lack that one big AAA title that propels a console launch, Xbox's third-party lineup includes some of the most coveted titles including Cuphead. However, this would never have been possible had it not been for the platform's flagship program, ID@Xbox.
Now, the company has announced that the program has generated over $500 million in sales since its inception in 2013. It made the announcement on Twitter:
ID@Xbox replaced a similar Xbox 360-era program, Xbox Live Indie Games, and bettered its concept in several ways. The independent studios and developers flocked to the new program which now claims over 500 games and much more to follow. Suffice to say that the program has been an enormous success for Microsoft. Not only do the devs love it but, it also spawned a similar concept for new developers to try a hand at developing games- the Xbox Live Creators Program.
