It's been almost five years since Netflix introduced user profiles as part of its streaming service, making it easier for different people using the same account to get personalized recommendations for their individual tastes. Since the inception of the feature, the company hasn't provided a whole lot of customization options for the profile icons, however.
That's about to change, as the firm has today announced some improvements to the feature in the form of a blog post alongside the video above. The biggest highlight of the announcement is clearly the ability to set characters from your favorite movies and TV shows as your profile icon, providing users with a new way to express their fandom. It's currently unclear which characters will be available to choose from, but the set will likely expand over time.
The video also briefly showcases improvements to the traditional smileys which have served as profile icons thus far. Rather than a flat color, the icon's background will have a color gradient, and accessories you add to the character will apparently be colorful as well, which should make them a little more lively.
Of all the improvements Netflix could make to its service, it seems unlikely that new profile icons are what users would have the biggest need for, but it does allow users to express themselves a little better. If you're looking for more meaningful updates, the video streaming company recently updated its TV experience for better usability.
