Google’s Hoi Lam has confirmed that the Google Store team decided on the decision to only stock Google hardware on the Google Store a year before making the changes in the last few days. The revelation came as Lam replied to a user who was disappointed that the recent Google event didn’t mention Android Wear and, instead, Android Wear watches were yanked from Google’s online store.
Over several tweets, Mr Lam said:
“The Google Store team made a change that they will only stock Google made hardware. Our team knew the plan for a year now and invested in custom store fronts with online retailers. Together with all our partners (online/offline), we will reach more people all over the world than ever before! When I visited partner stores in London and Shanghai, they couldn’t be more excited about our line up this fall! On a technical front, I have more to share about how we think about updates – stay tuned!”
When Lam mentioned Google’s online partners, he linked to the Android Wear shop on Amazon which lists all the Android Wear watches and accessories. Unfortunately, it seems that the Android Wear store on Amazon is only available to users in the US, so those who could previously rely on Google to buy a smartwatch will have to look a little harder now. Hopefully this issue, which seems to have been overlooked, will be resolved as Google re-orients itself.
