OnePlus is merging its OxygenOS with OPPO's ColorOS

Last month, OPPO and OnePlus announced their merger. The move didn't come as a surprise since both brands are subsidiaries of Chinese tech giant BBK electronics. The news, however, did make OnePlus fans a bit nervous about the future of OxygenOS. Initially, the company reassured its fans stating that OxygenOS is going nowhere. While that may be technically true, the latest development now suggests that OnePlus' OxygenOS is all set to merge with OPPO's ColorOS. For those not in the know, let's just say ColorOS isn't liked by most smartphone enthusiasts.

The update comes from a forum post made by OxygenOS' Product Lead, Gary C. He writes that the two companies are working on "integrating the codebase of OxygenOS and ColorOS". The post further claims that the move will help OPPO and OnePlus achieve better efficiency and also standardize the software experience across the board.

According to the company executive, "This is a change that you will likely not even notice since it's happening behind the scenes". Merging the two operating systems will definitely help BBK electronics streamline the software development process.

Along with this announcement, the company also shed light on its software update roadmap. Under which, flagship devices such as the OnePlus 8 series and newer handsets will receive three major Android updates and four years of security patches. The mid-range OnePlus Nord and Nord CE will receive two major Android updates and three years of security updates. The budget Nord N series including the likes of N10 and N100 will get a single major Android update and three years of security updates. The schedule is meant for unlocked devices and may not hold for carrier-locked mobiles.
