This month at Apple’s “Hey Siri” event, the company announced a long awaited update to the Apple TV. The update includes revamped hardware, updated apps and a new Operating System in the form of tvOS.
Announced alongside tvOS was the Software Development Kit, which will allow third parties to create apps for the platform. While several companies had apps announced at the event including Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, we were left to wonder who else would announce support for the device. Today, Plex has done just this. The popular media platform has stated their intention to develop an app for the new Apple TV. Swapnil Bhartiya over at ITworld contacted the developers of Plex and they had this to say:
We are very excited to have a crack at bringing our users Apple TV. It’s been a long requested platform and we’re excited to work on it. We want it, our users want it…and we’re anxiously awaiting the tvOS developer beta info, so we can finally dig in.
However, it’s still early days, so as for a timeframe:
Of course we have started digging in and looking at it, but we have some bigger questions to answer before we can set any expectations.
Media consumption apps are only a part of what developers can now do with the Apple TV. Invited onstage at the event were Australian based developers, Hipster Whale, creators of Crossy Road for iOS. Andy Sum from Hipster Whale announced a new version of Crossy Road purpose built for the Apple TV. The new version includes multi-player mode along with new characters. Players can make use of the new Apple TV remote or their iOS devices as controllers for the game.
While it’s still early days for the new Apple TV and tvOS, we can’t wait to see what else developers will come up with over the coming months.
Those looking to get a bit more technical can check out the tvOS documentation over at the Apple Developer Library
