If you are a video podcast creator who has set up shop on Spotify, you'll soon be able to distribute your content through Apple Podcasts. The Sweden-based audio streaming giant teamed up with Apple to add support for the HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) video technology for its Megaphone and Spotify for Creators platforms.
What this means is that podcast creators can boost their reach by sharing content on Apple Podcasts without making any changes to their existing setup or upload process. Spotify wants to achieve platform-agnostic video distribution; however, it won't leave creators behind on the money front.
Video podcast creators who share their content on Apple Podcasts will still be able to monetize it, so they don't have to pick between audience reach and revenue. Spotify didn't reveal the exact date for when it will roll out the integration, only saying it's actively working with Apple behind the scenes on it.
"Video is where podcast growth is happening. Expanding your show's presence across Spotify and Apple Podcasts means more discoverability, more engagement, and more ways to earn from the content you're already creating," Spotify said.
While more details are yet to arrive, the company noted that creators will have to upload their content directly to Spotify (rather than distribute through other methods, such as RSS) to take advantage of the Apple integration and monetization features.
Spotify also shared an update on third-party podcast integrations, building on its previous announcement that podcast hosting providers would integrate with the Spotify Distribution API to support video. The integration is now live for Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace, and creators on these platforms can share their video content directly on Spotify and monetize it if eligible.
The audio streaming giant has been exploring podcast opportunities left, right, and center. It recently launched a new command-line tool that lets AI agents create and upload podcasts. It also gave users more control over how video content appears in the app, allowing them to turn it off.
