At Microsoft's Build 2018 developer conference today, the company had a session to show off the new Fluent Design elements that are coming to Office. The session focused on OneNote and the Windows 10 Mail apps, since the other Office apps in the Store are Win32 and really aren't using any Fluent Design.
As we reported yesterday, OneNote is to be the first app to use the new command bar flyout element, and there's also a new density element that adapts to different screen sizes, use cases, and resolutions. At today's session, Microsoft announced density in the Windows 10 Mail app.
With the way things are now, on a low-resolution screen, users can only see about six emails at a time. While bigger controls might make more sense on a touchscreen, not all users are using touch, so these bigger UI controls don't need to be so big all the time.
Mail now has three settings: spacious, medium, and compact. Microsoft says that with the new settings, users can see 26% more emails in multi-line mode and 84% more in single-line mode.
The one thing that seems unfortunate is that the settings must be switched manually, rather than switching automatically when the user switches between tablet mode and back.
The update for the Mail app is available from the Microsoft Store now. You can find it here.
