It's been a year since Twitter made its first move into having official applications across many platforms for its service. It first acquired Atebits, a company which created the widely popular Tweetie app for iPhone and for Mac. It seems lightning does strike twice; TechCrunch is reporting that Twitter has acquired TweetDeck — another popular multi-platform application — for up to $50 million. The deal TweetDeck and Twitter have come to, which is at least worth $40 million, is a cash-and-stock agreement according to their sources.
TweetDeck was in negotiations earlier this year with UberMedia to sell their company for about $30 million. UberMedia, which also makes Twitter applications for mobile phones, was recently in a tiff with Twitter because of its then-named Twitter for BlackBerry app UberTwitter. Twitter argued that they couldn't use the name of the company in the application's title causing UberMedia to change it to UberSocial.
UberMedia has become an acquisition powerhouse: UberSocial was actually bought by them, as was popular Twidroyd for Android devices, Echofon, among other companies and products that deal with social media. "They simply couldn’t allow UberMedia to have so much market share in this space," TechCrunch says.
