After a couple of teasers, Xiaomi formally announced today the Redmi K20 series comprising a standard model and the K20 Pro, which is the first flagship device under its Redmi sub-brand. The new range of smartphones was unveiled in China along with the entry-level Redmi 7A and the RedmiBook 14.
Both the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro sport a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with support for an in-display fingerprint sensor. Xiaomi also noted that the K20 Pro is the industry's first smartphone to use a hardware DC dimming system for its screen in order to address the PWM (pulse width modulation) flickering problem and enhance picture color accuracy.
The K20 Pro is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC while the standard model is powered by a Snapdragon 730 SoC. Both devices feature the Game Turbo 2.0 for an improved gaming experience. In addition, the K20 Pro has an eight-layered graphite cooling technology for heat dissipation under heavy tasks.
What's more interesting about the phones is their four-sided curved glass back with a unique flamed texture. Hopping on the industry's craze over a pop-up selfie camera, the handsets also feature a 20MP elevating camera on the front with a sapphire glass cover. The front camera has the same protection capability as that of the OnePlus 7 series, enabling the camera module to retract in the event of dropping.
Round the back, both phones boast a triple camera setup consisting of a 48MP main sensor from Sony, 13MP ultra-wide angle shooter, and an 8MP telephoto camera.
Both phones pack a 4,000mAh battery with support for 27W fast charging for the K20 Pro and 18W charging for the K20. The K20 series also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack. The standard version will retail from ¥1,999 (~$290) for the 6GB/64GB variant while the K20 Pro will be priced from ¥2,499 (~$360) for the same configuration. Both phones will go on sale from June 1, with pre-orders kicking off today.
